The Pros and Cons of Smokeless Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes are being touted as a great way for smokers to quit smoking — or at least cut way back on the amount of nicotine they inhale.

We’ll do a short electronic cigarette review here, listing the pros and cons of electronic cigarettes.

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e cigarettes or smokeless cigarettes, give smokers the look and feel — and even the nicotine — of a “real” cigarette. Each smokeless cigarette has a battery, an atomizer and a cartridge filled with liquid nicotine. The nicotine is vaporized by the atomizer when the smoker inhales, signaling a switch to turn on in the device, which then heats up the atomizer.

The result is a “hit” of nicotine, minus the tar and the smoke of a “real” cigarette. The e cigarette does emit “smoke,” in the form of the vaporized liquid nicotine. Yet there is no smoky stink. Neither is their tar or nicotine residue. In fact, no e cigarette review would be complete without mentioning that the liquid nicotine cartridges come in different strengths, so that a smoker can lessen the amount of nicotine he or she inhales with each puff.

Another smokeless cigarette review item: electronic cigarettes can be less expensive to “smoke” than regular cigarettes. Today’s cigarettes run about $50 per carton ($5 per pack at 10 packs per carton). The equivalent amount of liquid nicotine cartridges cost between $20-$30, a substantial savings, especially when considering the savings over months and years.

An e cigarette review would not be fair without discussing the bad points of smokeless cigarettes. Many people use electronic cigarettes as a way to cut back or quit smoking. But many quitters advocate the “cold turkey” method as the best way to quit. Stop smoking completely and live through the physical and mental withdrawals that will inevitably come as the smoker leaves nicotine behind. Electronic cigarettes, these cold-turkey proponents argue, fool smokers into thinking they are lessening their addiction to nicotine.
